Fresh flowers on cake - Health and Safety?

Postby pauline » Thu Apr 22, 2010 11:22 am

I was planning to put fresh flowers on the wedding cake I am making but have just heard that there are strict rules surrounding these as they could be poisonous. This has worried me - don't want anybody ill after the wedding!

Has anybody else heard about this?

Hi Pauline,
Fresh flowers have always been used on cakes so I wouldn't worry too much. I found a site that lists edible and safe flowers, it even lists the poisonous flowers so have a browse over it;-

There's different ways of displaying fresh flowers on a cake. You can ask a local forist to make up the posy for you or if you are doing it yourself, there's a fresh flower pick that single or small flowers sprays fit into product code K2058501, go to http://www.cakecraftworld.co.uk/product ... 70&scc=563. If you are having a ring of fresh flowers between tiers, I would suggest the polystyrene separators, the flowers can be wired up and the wires pushed into the polystyrene - go to http://www.cakecraftworld.co.uk/category.asp?cc=100 If you require a posy of flowers there's display cups product code K2058504 for a small posy and a crytal look small bowl for a larger posy product code K2051404.

Thanks Lin but the bride has definitely said now that she would not want to risk poisonous flowers on the cake so am doing sugar ones, to cascade down and fix them before transporting the cake there. At least she can keep them afterwards!

The florist would have cost a lot and done it on the morning at the venue so we would not know what it looked like until we got there, all too stressful.

Thanks for the info. though!

Hi Pauline,
That is the only drawback with fresh flowers, unless they are in arranged in a flower cup in oasis when they can be done the day before - they have to be done on the day of the wedding. I love fresh flowers on cakes and have used them a lot in the past but have always ordered them from a florist. Good luck, I'm sure it will look fantastic.
